Mourinho Makes 2 Changes In 4-2-3-1: Predicted Man Utd Line-Up To Face Man City

Manchester United will look to continue their 100% start to the season when they take on Man City on Saturday. Here is the side I think Jose Mourinho will pick

Premier League football returns as Manchester United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon in a game that sees Jose Mourinho take on old foe Pep Guardiola.

Here is the side I think Mourinho will pick for the game:

Goalkeeper: David de Gea is certain to keep his place as Mourinho’s No.1.

Defence: Antonio Valencia isn’t due to return from his long-haul trip to South America until Friday morning meaning he’ll have less than 24 hours to prove his fitness ahead of the game. It’s unlikely the Ecuadorian international will be passed fit so out-of-favour full-back Matteo Darmian could be drafted in.

Eric Bailly has struck up a superb partnership with Daley Blind which has seen Chris Smalling consigned to the bench and that’s expected to continue this weekend while Luke Shaw should keep his place at left-back.

Midfield: Marouane Fellaini recovered from a knock to play for Belgium in midweek so the midfielder should be passed fit to keep his place alongside Paul Pogba in the middle of the park.

If Mourinho feels he needs to mix things up then he could call upon Michael Carrick or Ander Herrera to play alongside the French superstar.

Attack: Marcus Rashford must have played his way in to Mourinho’s thoughts after scoring the winner off the bench against Hull two week ago before bagging a superb hat-trick for the England under-21’s in midweek.

If the youngster does start, we could see Juan Mata drop to the bench as Zlatan Ibrahimovic will keep his place up front while Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are also expected to be retained in the starting eleven.

Henrikh Mkhitaryn is a major doubt after picking up an injury while away on international duty with Armenia last week.

Here is how we think United will line-up:

I as andrew i think this is manchester united’s time to win over man city due to the confidence and strength of jose the experienced coach in his players and more especially the fitness of the lined up squad and the starting eleven and so i feel that man u might easily win this match under all costs if possible.

I’ve read that Darmian is out of favour with Jose; if that is true then Fosu-Mensah or Bailly are more likely to play at RB (assuming Valencia can’t play). Neither of them would get forward and put in crosses for Zlatan like Valencia does though. One solution to that would be to select Young, who is a quality crosser and can play on either wing, in a free role for at least the first half of the game. Young’s job would be to run across the pitch, 25 yards out from City’s goal, draw fouls, run Fernando ragged, and drag players out of position allowing Pogba and Rooney the space to run at the centrebacks who would already be fully occupied by Zlatan. Martial would come on for the tiring Young in the second half unless we were chasing the game at half time then I’d push swap Rashford for Rooney and push Fellaini up front with Zlatan and keep Young on the wing for his crosses. Otherwise I’d keep Rashford on the bench unless we were in need of his goals. Even without Aguero City are too dengerous going forward to risk playing a midfield duo of the slow Fellaini and the attack oriented Pogba. Putting Schneiderlin in as a shuttling RCM with both defensive and offensive duties would provide Fellaini, Pogba and Young with some support.

I’d play a fluid 4-4-2 (midfield diamond) and 4-2-3-1 when in possession reverting to 4-3-3 (or 4-3-2-1) when City have the ball. Fellaini DM, Schneiderlin RCM (dropping back to DM when needed) with Pogba LCM/LAM and Young playing just behind Rooney and Zlatan. The game plan would be for the full backs to play a more disciplined role than usual with Roney and Young supplying crosses and to overload City’s small back line and keeper with height and power, especially at set peices with Fellaini joining the attack (covered by Schneiderlin). Pogba, Rooney and Zlatan would be told to test the keeper and shoot on sight unless there was a better option available.

    4-4-2 (diamond)
    De gea
    Fosu-Mensah Bailly Blind Shaw
    Schneiderlin Pogba
    Zlatan Rooney

    De gea
    Fosu-Mensah Bailly Blind Shaw
    Schneiderlin Fellaini
    Young Pogba Rooney

    De gea
    Fosu-Mensah Bailly Blind Shaw
    Schneiderlin Pogba Fellaini
    Young Zlatan Rooney

Romero, Rojo, Smalling, Carrick, Rashford, Martial and one of Herrera/Lingard/Memphis/Mata on the bench
