Manchester United want to sign £40m-rated Tottenham star Eric Dier as Jose Mourinho gears up for another busy summer in the transfer market, according to The Sun.
Mourinho resisted the temptation to dip in to the January window but the United boss is set to be handed a healthy transfer kitty this summer as he looks to turn his squad in to serious title challengers next season.
A new central midfielder appears to be on the Portuguese bosses agenda and The Sun claim that United are now eyeing an audacious £40m swoop on Tottenham for Eric Dier.
The 23-year-old has developed in to a top class player since joining Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 and while Dier made his name as a centre-half, he’s also excelled in a defensive midfield role under Mauricio Pochettino.
The Sun suggest that Mourinho is a huge fan of the England international and see’s him as the perfect long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 soon and is out-of-contract this summer.
However, doing a deal with Spurs isn’t going to be easy as no doubt the north Londoners will be desperate to keep hold of Dier and they are under no pressure to sell any time soon as the defender is under contract until 2021.
That’s unlikely to deter United though and the newspaper says that Mourinho is eyeing Dier as part of a big-money double swoop that will also see the Manchester giants try to sign Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann.
With Wayne Rooney fully expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after falling out of favour a new forward is needed and Griezmann is widely reported to be Mourinho’s number one target.
The French international has developed in to one of the best players on the planet during his time with Atletico so he won’t be cheap with any transfer fee expected to go close to the £89m United paid for Paul Pogba.
However, United have the financial muscle to pull it off and Griezmann would be a sensational signing so I’m sure Reds’ fans would love to see the 25-year-old lining-up at Old Trafford next season.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting few months at United and while I feel they’ve got a good chance of landing Griezmann, I think they may find it more difficult to prise Dier away from White Hart Lane.
