Manchester United are plotting a move for Tottenham’s Eric Dier after shelving plans to sign £50m-rated Monaco midfielder Fabinho this summer, according to a report in the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho is gearing up for a busy summer and is in the market for a new defensive midfielder to act as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 next month.
Fabinho has emerged as a key target in recent weeks with the Telegraph citing a report from Marca earlier this week that claimed United were in advanced negotiations over a £50m deal with Monaco.
The Brazilian international made his name as a right-back but excelled after being converted in to a defensive midfielder last season as he helped Leonardo Jardim’s side clinch the Ligue 1 title.
However, it looks like United are ready to put the stoppers on any proposed deal to sign Fabinho as the Mirror quote journalist Gabriele Marcotti as telling ESPN FC that Mourinho’s prime target is Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
Marcotti claims that Fabinho is merely a back-up option for United in case they don’t manage to do a deal with Spurs for the 23-year-old England international.
The Italian journalist is quoted by the Mirror as saying:
“Fabinho is a guy that they as a club wanted to hang on to. Equally Fabinho’s people who have close ties to the Manchester United manager of course, they view things a little differently.
“They’ve been pushing quite aggressively last summer, in the January transfer window.
“I’ve been led to believe that United had other priorities, other top targets in that defensive midfield position, among them of course Eric Dier.”
Dier has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks with the Times reporting last month that the versatile midfielder was on Mourinho’s wanted list as he looked to strengthen his squad ahead of United’s return to the Champions League.
Tottenham are in a strong position as Dier is tied to a long-term contract but the newspaper suggested that United were hoping £40m would be enough to persuade them to cash-in this summer.

Dier has largely been played at the back by Mauricio Pochettino but he favours the holding role and it seems Mourinho is willing to give him the opportunity to shine in his preferred position if he moves to Old Trafford.
We’ll have to wait and see how things progress over the coming weeks but I personally think United are going to find it extremely difficult to get a deal agreed with Spurs, so Mourinho may be forced to turn his attention back to Fabinho later in the summer.
