Arsenal Plot Bargain Swoop For German Star But Face Competition From Liverpool
Arsenal have made Leon Goretzka one of their key summer transfer targets but face competition from Liverpool to sign the Schalke midfielder
The transfer window may be closed but clubs are still working hard ahead of January and next summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are after Leon Goretzka…
Arsenal have made Leon Goretzka one of their key summer transfer targets but face competition from Liverpool to sign the Schalke midfielder, according to the Mirror.
Goretzka has developed in to one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Bundesliga since joining Schalke from boyhood club Bochum in the summer of 2013.
The 22-year-old has become a key part of Domenico Tedesco’s starting eleven and he’s also established himself as a regular in the German national team squad with 6 goals in his 12 caps so far.
However, Goretzka’s future at the Veltins-Arena is in serious doubt as he’s in the final year of his contract and despite Schalke’s best efforts to tie him down to a new deal, the midfielder has so far refused to sign an extension.
That’s led to strong interest from a number of clubs throughout Europe and the Mirror claim that Arsenal have made Goretzka their key midfield transfer target ahead of next summer.
Arsene Wenger needs to revamp his squad with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez all tipped to leave when their contracts expire at the end of the season and it seems Goretzka is now firmly on his radar.
The Gunners signed Sead Kolasinac for nothing last summer and Goretzka would be another superb free transfer signing if Wenger could lure the midfielder to the Emirates.
However, Arsenal will face some serious competition for his signature as the Mirror claim that Liverpool are also keen along with the likes of Manchester City, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Jurgen Klopp could be about to lose Emre Can if he doesn’t sign a new deal over the coming months so it looks like the Liverpool boss is eyeing Goretzka as a potential replacement.
