Player Demands Move As Arsenal & Tottenham Battle To Sign £50m Star
Matthijs De Ligt has asked to leave Ajax as Arsenal and Tottenham battle it out to sign the £50m-rated central defender this summer
The summer transfer window is fast approaching and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Matthijs de Ligt….
Matthijs De Ligt has asked to leave Ajax as Arsenal and Tottenham battle it out to sign the £50m-rated central defender this summer, according to the Mirror.
De Ligt has been with Ajax his entire career so far and he’s emerged as one of the hottest young prospects in European football since progressing through their youth system to become a first team regular.
The 18-year-old has been virtually ever-present so far this season after being named as the youngest captain in the clubs history while he’s also a full international with the Dutch national team.
De Ligt’s potential has caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League as the Mirror claims that Arsenal and Tottenham have expressed their interest while the likes of Barcelona, Man City and Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on his progress.
Arsenal are expected to be in the market for another centre-back this summer after Laurent Koscielny was ruled out for at least 6 months with an Achilles injury while Per Mertesacker is set to retire.
The Gunners have seemingly lined-up De Ligt as a potential target, however, they’ll have to battle north London rivals Tottenham who are on the look out for a replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian international is expected to leave Spurs after failing to agree terms over a new deal and Mauricio Pochettino is a huge fan of De Ligt’s but they may have to pay more than the £35m they paid Ajax for Davinson Sanchez last summer.
That’s because the Mirror claim Ajax value De Ligt at closer to £50m despite the fact the 6ft 2in defender has now asked to leave the club at the end of the season.

We’ll have to wait and see whether any club is willing to meet that asking price but with transfer fees rising ever year, £50m for a player of De Ligt’s potential could look like a bargain in 5 years time.
