Player Hints At Move As Man Utd Step-Up Efforts To Sign £55m International CB
Manchester United have turned their attention to signing Toby Alderweireld after the £55m-rated centre-back hinted at a move away from Tottenham
The summer transfer window is now open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Toby Alderweireld….
Manchester United have turned their attention to signing Toby Alderweireld after the £55m-rated centre-back hinted at a move away from Tottenham, according to the Telegraph.
Jose Mourinho knows he needs to strengthen his squad if United are to compete with Manchester City next season and he wrapped-up a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred on Tuesday.
The Portuguese coach is now looking to land a top class central defender as the future’s of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are in doubt following inconsistent campaigns last year.
The Telegraph claim United are now focussing their attention on landing Alderweireld with Mourinho desperate to lure the £55m-rated centre-back to Old Trafford this summer.
Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 following an impressive campaign on-loan at Southampton.
However, his future in north London is in serious doubt as although the Belgian international has two years remaining on his contract, his deal includes a clause allowing the 29-year-old to leave for just £25m in 2019.
So Tottenham are being forced to cash-in this summer while they can still command a sizeable fee and Alderweireld has hinted he’s ready for a new challenge but admits the decision is down to Spurs.
Alderweireld is quoted as saying by the Telegraph:
“I have another two years [on my] contract. Tottenham decides about my future. Of course, I have my own idea. But that is not the case now. The past season was tough. But I’m glad that I could play the last four matches. That means that I am ready for the World Cup.”
Alderweireld struggled to force his way back in to Mauricio Pochettino’s first team last season after recovering from a serious hamstring injury so it would be no surprise if he’s looking for a new club this summer.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Alderweireld would be an excellent signing for United if they manage to get a deal agreed with Tottenham.
