Manchester United are eyeing a move for Clement Lenglet after being frustrated in their attempts to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Jose Mourinho knows he needs to strengthen his squad this summer if United are to compete with Manchester City for the title next season and he’s already snapped-up Diogo Dalot from Porto and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
However, a new centre-back is also a priority and United have been heavily linked with Alderweireld as the Belgian international looks to find a way out of White Hart Lane this summer.
The 29-year-old’s future at Spurs is in serious doubt as he’s failed to agree terms over a new deal and he lost his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team last season to Davinson Sanchez.
The Sun claim United have already seen a £55m bid knocked back by Tottenham as Daniel Levy is holding out for a fee closer to the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January.
However, United are reluctant to go that high for a player approaching 30 years old and the M.E.N claim Mourinho has now identified Lenglet as a cheaper alternative for Alderweireld.
The French U21 international has become one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe since joining Sevilla in 2017 and he was excellent during their Champions League win over United last season.
The newspaper says Lenglet has a £31m release clause in his contract so he’ll be significantly cheaper than Alderweireld and he’s also seven years his junior so a deal for the Frenchman makes a lot of sense.

The 22-year-old has huge potential so I think he’d be an excellent long-term signing for United if they decided to take him to Old Trafford this summer, but I’m sure Mourinho hasn’t given up hope of landing Alderweireld just yet.
