Arsenal Agree To Meet £22m Fee As Emery Closes-In On Uruguayan Star

The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are ready to sign Lucas Torreira….

Arsenal have agreed to meet Lucas Torreira’s £22m release clause as Unai Emery looks to sign the Sampdoria midfielder this summer, according to reports via TeamTalk.

Emery is expected to be extremely busy in the transfer market this summer and a new central midfielder is a priority as Santi Cazorla has already left the club while Jack Wilshere’s future also remains in serious doubt.

Several players have been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent months but Torreira emerged as a target last week after widespread reports suggested Arsenal chiefs were keen on the South American.

The 22-year-old has developed in to one of the best defensive midfielders in Serie A since joining Sampdoria from Pescara two years ago and he’s been named in the Uruguay squad ahead of this summers World Cup finals in Russia.

Napoli have also been strongly linked with Torreira but it looks like Arsenal are now in pole position as TeamTalk are citing a report from SampNews24 that claims we’ve agreed to meet his £22m release clause.

However, the Italian publication suggests that any proposed deal is being complicated by Torreira’s agent as he’s reportedly demanding hefty fees to negotiate the transfer to north London.

We’ll have to wait and see how talks progress but we desperately need to sign a defensive midfielder this summer and Torreira would be a solid addition to the squad.

At 5ft 6in, the Uruguayan international won’t be the midfield ‘beast’ many fans feel we need but he’s technically sound, has great positional sense and is a superb passer so he’d bring other qualities to our midfield.
