Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal got the season off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon.
The first half was fairly even as although Arsenal had the lions share of possession we only had one real chance to show for it after Aubameyang saw a powerful effort well saved while Newcastle had a couple of half-chances themselves with Jonjo Shelvey clipping the post and Joelinton glancing a header wide.
Arsenal started positively after the break and opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Aubameyang cooly dinked over Newcastle keeper Martin Dúbravka after superb work from Ainsley Maitland-Niles down the right flank.
From then on Arsenal controlled things with Newcastle offering very little in terms of a comeback. Unai Emery introduced Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli from the bench to hand them their debuts as Arsenal held on to secure a vital 1-0 away win.
