Why we shouldn’t expect a trophy from Chelsea soon

You might wonder why Chelsea fans cannot expect the club to win trophies anytime soon. In this article, we give some reasons why…

Chelsea has broken some incredible transfer records in the last two windows and has added some exciting names to their squad.

Not so long ago, Graham Potter managed Brighton, a club that could not compete with Chelsea for a player and relied on their scouting network to help them to bring some of the finest talents from Africa and South America or other smaller European nations.

Now the Englishman is being bombarded with world-class talents from some of the best European clubs around, and he is expected to coach them into a successful team.

Potter did an amazing job at Brighton, but the expectations at the Amex are much smaller than at Chelsea, where he now has the best players in the league at his disposal.

Chelsea had an accomplished gaffer not so long when Thomas Tuchel was their boss, but they sacked him for unknown reasons and brought an inexperienced Englishman in as their coach.

The Blues fans are expectant because they now have one of the best squads in the league, filled with talented young players capable of doing well in the short term and the future.

But they must be prepared to wait for some time before their club starts winning trophies again because it will not happen overnight.

Pep Guardiola achieved success almost immediately after becoming Manchester City’s gaffer after the club spent a lot of money on the players he wanted and replaced some of the flops he had met at the Etihad.

Chelsea fans will be making an unrealistic demand if they expect that from their freshly-assembled team. You might wonder why their fans cannot expect them to win trophies soon. In this article, we give some reasons.

   Inexperienced manager

Even though Potter was arguably one of the best English managers in the league when he was at the helm at Brighton, the gaffer is clearly inexperienced at the highest level and has never won a trophy in English football.

This means although he has an expensively-assembled squad to work with, Potter is still not at the level to lead Chelsea to win trophies immediately.

The Blues have two choices, either fire the Englishman and replace him with a proven winner to shorten the time for them to win major trophies in England, or give Potter time and not expect him to do magic too early into his stint as their head coach.

The good thing about Chelsea’s decision to make him their boss and signing youngsters for the ex-Swansea manager is that he and his players will grow together because most of them are at the start of their careers.

    Confused signings

Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly has made his inexperience in football ownership apparent through the transfer decision he has made in recent weeks.

The American has signed duplicate players to positions that the Blues are already well-stocked while not buying players for some other spots.

This means the manager now has more than enough options for some positions while needing more depth in others.

Football is a team sport; every position in a team contributes to its performance in every game.

This means when one part lacks the required quality, the others could struggle because no matter how many goals the strikers score, the team will lose a game if the defence is not strong.

Chelsea has made improvements to their squad, but their spending was not balanced, and it needs time to be addressed, which means the fans must forget about winning a trophy for now until that is sorted out.

For now, Potter must build a team around the options at his disposal, and he might even have to play some men out of position just to cover for the weakness in the group.

      Lack of playing identity

One thing Potter was praised for while at Brighton was his tactical flexibility, which saw him put out different formations for almost every game.

This could be a good strategy because it means opponents do not know what to expect from your team, but it could also be a bad idea, especially at the top.

Fans like to brag about their team and its uniqueness to others, so the side must have a way of playing and a stable system it works with.

Potter has carried on using different formations and tactics as the manager of Chelsea, which is one reason his team has performed underwhelmingly because the players seem confused about what is required of them since it keeps changing.

Until the Blues find a playing identity that their players understand and master, it will be difficult for them to win some matches, and if you cannot win every opponent you are facing, you have no chance of winning trophies.

When fans buy Chelsea tickets, they expect to see their club play in a certain way, which will help them understand if their team is having a good or a bad day.

    Focus on long-term plans.

Chelsea’s new signings like Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez have all signed long-term deals that could keep them at the club for at least seven years.

The club’s owners have convinced these players to sign long-term deals because they focus more on long-term success.

They are building a team that will still run smoothly in the next few seasons, which means immediate success is not their goal.

The manager will be given enough time to build a coherent side that will eventually sustain success when it starts to win the trophies that seem elusive now.

Fans must be on the same page and be patient for the players to blend and now understand the tactics of their manager perfectly before they start to win gongs.

    Disruptive owners

The manner in which the Chelsea owners fired Thomas Tuchel shows they will be ruthless in dealing with their employees.

Even though we expect them to give enough time to Potter to bring success back to Stamford Bridge, they still seem to have a disruptive influence on them, considering how they have gone after almost every exciting player on the market.

If they do not allow the team to settle and work well with each other, success will not come quickly, and fans will be made to wait before the team wins trophies again.

After spending so much on new men in the last two transfer windows, the Blues’ owners must now allow the new men to settle in and avoid continuing to add talents to the group unless it is to a spot they haven’t already strengthened.

     Need for consistency

Despite all the big-money buys at Stamford Bridge now, Chelsea has lacked consistency, and it is really hard to tell which Chelsea will show up in a particular game because of that.

Liverpool and Manchester City have been more successful than most English sides in the last decade because they have a settled squad and consistently performed well to the highest standards.

If a club cannot reach these standards regularly, there is no way it can become successful at winning trophies, and Chelsea fans must know this.

Boehly has shown he will spend money to buy any player if he needs to, but it takes more than money to bring success to a Premier League club.
