Euro Success Will Stand England In Good Stead For 2023 World Cup Test
England did it the hard way to win the European Championships but that will stand Sarina Wiegman’s side in good stead for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Nobody can argue England did it the hard way to win the European Championships last summer but that will stand Sarina Wiegman’s side in good stead for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
There will be some stern tests from nations outside of Europe but England’s journey to win that major trophy last year could give them the edge as they look to lift the biggest prize going in Australia.
Lionesses Showed Their Teeth To Claim European Crown
It was an impressive tournament from Wiegman’s side to handle the pressure and expectation to win Euro 2022 on home soil. On the back of that success in England, the Lionesses are 4/1 in the Women’s World Cup 2023 betting to win the tournament, which is being hosted in Australia and New Zealand. Germany are 7/1 in the football betting to lift the trophy and it was the Germans who England managed to beat 2-1 in extra-time to win the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. It was a day that will live long in English sporting history, as England’s women did what the men’s side failed to do the previous year in a European Championship final.
England overcame challenges throughout that competition, with the first warning side to their rivals being an 8-0 demolition job on Norway in the group stages. A tight contest was expected with the Norwegians in Brighton but England blew away the Scandinavians, who were left somewhat shellshocked after the full-time whistle on the south coast. A 5-0 thrashing of Northern Ireland soon followed before England delved into the nail-biting knockout stages.
Extra-time Heroics Show Lionesses Have The Legs
England were forced to dig deep on two occasions in the Euro 2022 knockout stages to secure memorable wins in extra time. Starting with a strong Spain side in the quarter-finals, England showed their endurance and composure to overcome the Spanish after 90 minutes at their happy hunting ground of the Falmer Stadium in Brighton. The Lionesses managed to then build confidence in the semi-finals with another impressive performance to beat Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield to set up a showdown with Germany at Wembley. In another cagey encounter with everything on the line, the game went through to extra time, before Chloe Kelly made herself a hero by scoring the winning goal against Germany in the 110th minute.
England will undoubtedly face big tests at the 2023 World Cup but they should feel confident of topping their group, which includes China, Denmark and Haiti. Given how the Lionesses have progressed over recent years, many will be expecting them to top the group and there could potentially be a few more one-sided contests in this pool. Anything can happen in the knockout stages but Wiegman and her side know they have the experience of their Euro 2022 success to draw upon.
England are serious contenders for the World Cup this time around and the reigning European Champions can head Down Under knowing they have the potential to go all the way.
