These Are 7 of The Worst Players Liverpool FC Has Ever Had

There are bad signings and then there are bad signings. Here are some of the worst over the course of Liverpool’s history.

Christian benteke liverpool

Liverpool FC has had its fair share of star talent, from Steven Gerrard to John Barnes and Robbie Fowler. But for every magic superstar player, there’s also been an entirely forgettable – or entirely unforgettable – dud. Whether it’s huge signings that don’t stack up or a player that just fails to launch, Liverpool has had them all. And sometimes it’s not even the person themselves – it’s just a conflict in management. Today, rather than the red carpet, we’re going to roll out the icky brown pattered squishy 70s carpet and run you through our worst picks throughout the century of players at the club.

If for nothing else, it’d be worth your while going through this list, particularly if you’re a regular punter. If the past has taught us anything, it’s to be mindful when placing wagers on teams and their players. True, you can choose a great casino with 100 free spins on registration no deposit that also offers a sportsbook service with free bets, but choosing who to bet on is all on you.

1. Alberto Aquilani

When Aquilani was signed to Liverpool in 2009 for 20 million pounds, he came in as a “replacement” player for the powerful Xabi Alonso, who had a row with Liverpool’s manager and subsequently signed on with Real Madrid. It was always going to be tough shoes to fill for the young player from Italy, who was headed to the club from Roma. Not only was he following up a star player but he was fresh off a string of injuries and an early-year surgery.

Due to the club’s uncertainty and the athlete’s inability to demonstrate his full potential, he was loaned to Juventus in 2011 and then moved permanently to Fiorentina the following year after scoring just two goals for Liverpool during his time.

2. Andy Carroll

Another replacement for another star player. Andy Carroll was brought into Liverpool back in 2011 to replace the inimitable Fernando Torres. The fee for the man from English football was a whopping £35 million, making him the most expensive catch at the time. The promising young star was a winner in the Premier League but failed significantly in meeting expectations for Liverpool racking up just 11 goals in 58 games. As Carroll put it, the style of play at the club at the time just didn’t match his personal style as a striker, so the two were a mismatch.

3. Joe Cole

Joe wasn’t a terrible player for Liverpool, but after three years at the club, mainly spent away on loan, it was clear that he wasn’t exactly a jackpot player for the FC. While Cole was signed for free as a midfielder in what was considered a great deal for the club, his reported £100,000 a match for playing wasn’t fiscally responsible at the time, which resulted in the loaning out of the player.

4. El-Hadji Diouf

El-Hadji wasn’t just a fairly average to poor performing player for Liverpool, there are also published articles like ‘The extraordinary rap-sheet of El-Hadji Diouf’ floating around the internet, detailing his most deplorable traits and misdemeanors, which led him to be hated by many. Famously known for spitting on the opposition’s fans at a UEFA Cup match, as well as teasing another player with a broken leg, Diouf’s attitude was one of the reasons this player fared so badly at the club.

5. Christian Benteke

Christian Benteke spent just one year with Liverpool before making tracks over to Crystal Palace. The striker scored just 10 goals in 42 games, after being signed for £32.5 million. The poor performance on the team was attributed to conflicting styles of play between the goalscorer and the club itself, leading to his trade after only one brief season.

6. Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane may be known as a bit of a superstar, but his first outing at Liverpool was anything but worthy of that status. Robbie spent just six months with the club between 2008 and 2009 after signing for tens of millions of pounds. The reasoning at the time seemed to be conflicts in management of the star striker, who went on to big things including captaincy of the Republic of Ireland throughout his career up to 2016.

7. Sean Dundee

Sean Dundee is a South African footballer who remains remarkable during his time at Liverpool for being unremarkable. The player signed over in 1998 from the German team Karlsruher SC. This was due to striker Robbie Fowler’s injury, as a cover. Dundee only managed to play three games as a substitute during his time at the club before returning to Germany and a style of play that was far more suited to the man himself.
