Just nine games into the new English Premier League season and the race for the Golden Boot award is heating up. We look at the top candidates.

Just nine games into the new English Premier League season and the race for the Golden Boot award is heating up. Betting odds for the EPL’s top goal scorer vary slightly across the different sportsbooks, but they are rather comparable.

Unsurprisingly, last year’s award-winner, Erling Haaland, paces the other strikers and forwards with nine goals in as many matches. While leading Manchester City to a historic treble victory, Haaland scored 36 goals in 35 appearances in the previous campaign. The Norwegian is on pace for another season filled with goals, but it won’t be easy to capture the award two years in a row.

From Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to Tottenham’s Son Heung-min and several others, there are strong challengers looking to dethrone Man City’s prolific goal-scoring machine. Those who are interested in trying their hand at sports betting can compare the various odds on recommended sites to find the best platform for football punting. This article will explore the latest odds for the players most likely to finish with the most goals and subsequently win the Golden Boot award.

1. Erling Haaland

After finishing atop the league and averaging a goal each contest he appeared in, Erling Haaland deserves his rank as the player with the best odds to do it again. As the 2/7 favourite to retain the title of the EPL’s top scorer, Haaland scored this past weekend to lift City to a 2-1 victory over Brighton. It was Haaland’s first goal in a month since he last scored against Nottingham Forest.

Will Haaland continue his excellent form and net another goal in his squad’s upcoming derby match at Old Trafford on Sunday? Given the fact that Manchester United is allowing at least one goal per game, the odds are in Haaland’s favour.

2. Mohamed Salah

Often referred to as the king of African football, Mohamed “Mo” Salah has already won the Golden Boot award three times before. Two seasons ago, Salah finished tied for first with Heung-min Son, tallying 23 goals in 35 appearances. In the 2018-2019 season, Salah was again the co-recipient of the Golden Boot award, splitting the honour with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mané. And the year prior, the Egyptian scoring savant finished alone atop the league with 32 goals over 36 matches.

With seven goals through nine matches, Salah trails only Haaland for the most goals scored and has led Liverpool to its current position of fourth place in the standings. In the Reds’ last match against Everton, Mo Salah scored twice. Amidst ongoing transfer rumours, Salah looks to continue his good form when Liverpool squares off against Nottingham Forest this coming weekend.

3. Son Heung-min

The Tottenham standout is tied with Mo Salah with seven goals through the start of the campaign. Heung-min scored his seventh goal against Fulham last night, helping the Spurs remain atop the Premier League table two points ahead of Man City. The South Korean currently has the third-best odds at 12/1 for claiming his second career Golden Boot.

Next up for the Spurs is Crystal Palace, who have allowed eleven goals through in nine matches and have secured just one win over the past five matches. If Tottenham hope to finish the season atop the table, they will need their South Korean striker to continue his great form.

4. Ollie Watkins

The Aston Villa forward is currently tied for sixth with five goals scored through the first quarter of the season. Bookmakers currently have Watkins with the fourth-best odds (25/1) to finish with the most goals. After scoring fifteen goals last season, the Torquay product is on pace to tally at least twenty this campaign and is a big reason why The Villans sit in fifth place in the league standings.

Villa host the lowly Luton this weekend who give up an average of two goals per game. Watkins isn’t just excelling at scoring goals though, the 27-year-old is tied for second for the most assists with five. Despite going scoreless through the first five games of the season, Watkins has come on strong lately, scoring five in four games, including a hat trick against Brighton. He certainly has the most momentum to put the pressure on Haaland.

5. Alexander Isak

Rounding out the EPL players with the best odds to score the most goals this season is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak. The Swedish footballer has six goals so far with 33/1 odds of winning the Golden Boot. Isak has scored four goals over Newcastle’s last four games and is a big reason why the Magpies remain in sixth place overall.

Up next for Newcastle is the middle-of-the-pack Wolverhampton Wanderers who have allowed fifteen goals through the first part of the campaign. Isak should be able to find the back of the net at Molineux Stadium.

While this list is by no means exhaustive, it does feature five of the most likely candidates to score the most goals in the Premier League this season. Three of the strikers with the best odds have already won the Golden Boot award at least once before. Will this campaign crown a new scoring legend? Will Haaland go back-to-back? Or will Mo Salah tie Arsenal great Thierry Henry and win his fourth scoring title? Time will tell, but one thing for certain is that it will be an exciting race.
