Chelsea have submitted a formal offer to Monaco for the possible transfer of Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Xabi Alonso fielded an incompatible midfield pair of Malo Gusto and Romeo Lavia in the entertaining 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion last Sunday.
While the pair did their parts in helping the team, especially in transition, Brighton’s dominance and control from start to finish showed the gap Alonso must close to compete consistently this season.
A similar theme emerged in the club’s opening 3-2 win over Fulham, where the Blues ended the game with less possession (39) and fewer passes (381) because of the Cottagers’ sustained pressure and overwhelming superiority over their rivals’ midfield.
This has rarely been the case, largely due to Moises Caicedo’s combative ability to win the ball back and Enzo Fernandez’s immaculate ball-playing ability.
However, Caicedo is injured after coming off against Brighton, while Fernandez is reportedly nearing a blockbuster transfer to Manchester City.
As a result, the London giants have been exploring midfield options, with Football Talk citing French journalist Santi Aoun reporting that Chelsea are making significant progress in their pursuit of Monaco’s Lamine Camara.
Chelsea are now stepping up efforts to complete the transfer, as Fabrizio Romano claims that the Blues have submitted a formal £38m offer to Monaco to sign Camara, who is keen on the move.
‘Fantastic’ midfielder
However, the bid is considered too low and has thus been rebuffed by the French giants, according to the transfer expert.
Despite that, Chelsea remain in active talks for the midfielder’s transfer, who has been earmarked as a possible option should Fernández’s move to City be formalised.
Monaco currently sit top of the Ligue 1 table after recording two wins in their opening two games. Camara has played a significant role in their progress, and it’s no surprise Felipe Luis described him as a ‘fantastic’ player.
His displays in the Ligue 1 matchweek two against Marseille proved just that after getting an 8/10 rating from FootMercato.
He was at the heart of Monaco’s ball progression, occasionally dropping deep to orchestrate play, pushing higher to win the ball back, and staying on hand to disrupt Marseille’s attacking forays.
With negotiations ongoing, Chelsea will hope to convince Monaco to sell their prized asset by submitting a fresh, concrete offer.
