Liverpool are planning to reignite their interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh in January, according to Football Insider.
Since arriving at Brighton from Newcastle United in the summer of 2024, Minteh has developed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting wingers.
Minteh quickly adapted to the demands of English football, contributing 12 goals and assists during his first season. Although his output fell to seven goal contributions across all competitions last season, he remained a constant attacking threat in Fabian Hurzeler’s attack, and it’s no surprise his valuation has surged well over his £38m Transfermarkt valuation.
Minteh was among Liverpool’s targets, with Football Talk citing David Ornstein that the Reds submitted a formal offer to sign him, but the move failed to materialise as the club instead signed Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain in a big-money deal.
It appears Liverpool are still keen on adding him to their attack, as Football Insider claims that the Reds remain interested in signing the 22-year-old in January.
The report confirms that Andoni Iraola’s side pursued a move for the right winger until the last days of the summer transfer window, but an agreement was not reached.
Minteh to Liverpool
Despite two bids being rejected, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has suggested Minteh could still move to Anfield, and the Merseyside club are now considering a swoop in January, according to the report.
Providing further details on Liverpool’s potential move for Minteh, Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, explained: ‘Liverpool will be looking at a number of targets in January if they are planning to bring in a new right-sided attacker, somebody to fill the void of Mohamed Salah. I’m sure they’ll be keeping tabs on Yankuba Minteh’s situation at Brighton; they made a couple of bids for him that were rejected.’
However, the journalist clarifies that a deal depends on the performances of the club’s current options, and they are unlikely to consider a new winger if Cody Gakpo, Victor Munoz and Barcola are performing.
‘A lot will depend on what Liverpool do between now and January; if Barcola comes in and hits the ground running, and maybe they find a solution to that right-wing position, whether that’s Cody Gakpo or Victor Munoz, then they might not need to bring in that right-sided attacker,’ O’Rourke added.
Liverpool will hope to record consecutive victories for the first time this season when they host LaLiga side Atletico Madrid in UEFA Champions League matchweek one on Wednesday, September 9.
