Arsenal target Mertesacker: “To stay at Werder Bremen”
By Fab4.
Arsenal look set to miss out on Germany centre back Per Mertesacker after the defender said he will remain at his current club Werder Bremen, despite interest from the Gunners.
Reports emerged yesterday that Arsenal were considering launching a £10m bid for Mertesacker as Arsene Wenger rebuilds his defence ahead of next season. The 6ft 5″ defender has been in impressive form for his country during the World Cup, and Wenger saw him as a potential partner for Thomas Vermaelen next term. But those plans have taken a knock with the news that the 25-year-old intends on remaining at the Weserstadion.
“Werder Bremen is a good club with some challenges to go through,” he told Bild.
“Werder Bremen is a club able to achieve everything, we just need to show more consistency. I am going to stay a player of Werder Bremen.”
