Schalke are determined to keep hold of starlet Julian Draxler despite interest from several top European sides including Chelsea and Manchester United, according to Sky Sports News.
Draxler became the second youngest ever player to start a game in the Bundesliga when he broke into the Schalke first team aged just 17. He’s gone on to make over 90 appearances for the club and has impressed during Schalke’s run to the last 16 in the Champions League this season.
His impressive form has attracted interest from all over Europe with Sky Sports claiming Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United have joined the likes of AC and Inter Milan in tracking the exciting midfielder.
However, Schalke general manager Horst Heldt insists the club will do all they can to keep Drexler for as long as possible and feels securing Champions League qualification for next season could prove to be an important factor in doing so.
“Julian Draxler is under contract at our club and he is an important player,”
“We want to keep him at our club for as long as possible. It’s our obligation to ensure he feels fine being with us.
“From our point of view, it would be helpful to win a berth in the UEFA Champions League for next season. This would be a boost!” Heldt is quoted as saying by Sky Sports
Schalke currently occupy fourth place in the Bundesliga on goal difference so will face a tough fight to secure a Champions League berth ahead of next season. Sky Sports suggests that Draxler has three years left on his contract and is already a full German international, earning 3 caps so far, so the likes of Chelsea or Manchester United may have to dig deep if they’re to persuade the German’s into selling the talented youngster.
