Wenger Linked With Surprise Move For Ex-Midfielder
Arsenal are being linked with a surprise move to re-sign defensive midfielder Alex Song this summer just 12months after he quit north London for Barcelona.
Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, could Arsenal move to re-sign Alex Song?
Arsenal are being linked with a surprise move to re-sign midfielder Alex Song this summer just 12 months after he quit north London for Barcelona, according to the Express.
Song ended an eight year spell at Arsenal last summer when he joined the Catalan giants but his time at the Nou Camp hasn’t gone according to plan. The Cameroon international has struggled to force his way into the Barca first team and has made just 13 league appearances this season.
He was voted as the second worst signing of 2012, behind Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, by the readers of Marca and a move at the end of the season could be on the cards as he looks to revive his flagging career.
The Express claim Barcelona are willing to sell the defensive midfielder for around £12.7m and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, armed with a reported £70m ‘warchest’, could offer Song an unlikely escape route. However, the report suggests we could face competition from big-spending French outfit PSG, who are also understood to be interested.
While I think Arsenal certainly need to bring in a ‘proper’ defensive midfielder this summer I’m not sure Song is the man for the job. He left under something of a cloud with reports suggesting the boss had lost patience with his lackluster attitude in training, so unless Song has changed his ways, I can’t see why Wenger would re-sign him.

I think it’s best we look to other targets this summer if we want to bring in an athletic ball-winner to compliment the likes of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla. Either Etienne Capoue or Victor Wanyama would be my choice.
