Gonalons & Jovetic Head-Up Wenger’s Five-Man Shortlist Of Summer Targets
Arsene Wenger is targetting a keeper, centre-back, defensive midfielder and a striker this summer with Maxime Gonalons and Stevan Jovetic two of his top targets
Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, information on Arsene Wenger’s summer transfer targets.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is targetting a goalkeeper, centre-back, defensive midfielder and a striker this summer with Maxime Gonalons and Stevan Jovetic two of his prime targets, according to the Mirror.
Like many fans, I’ve called for the club to add a proper defensive midfielder to the squad every since we sold Alex Song to Barcelona last summer. While Mikel Arteta has done a decent job we desperately need an athletic ball-winner in the middle of the park next season to compliment the talents of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.
It seems we may get our wish with the Mirror claiming the boss has sent scouts to watch Lyon captain Gonalons on several occasions in recent months and is set to step up his interest during the final few weeks of the season ahead of a potential summer move.
The report suggests the France international is Wenger’s first choice but he is also keeping close tabs on Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue in case a deal can’t be struck for the £15m-rated 24-year-old.
The newspaper also claims that the boss wants to add another striker to the squad this summer with £20m-rated Fiorentina ace Jovetic understood to be our top target. I think our need for striking reinforcements is clear for all to see and I’d personally love to see the Montenegrin international come to the Emirates at the end of the season.
Goalkeeper is another area of concern with Wenger seemingly wanting to add an experienced stopper who can compete with Wojciech Szczesny for the No.1 shirt, and the Mirror suggest German international Rene Adler is under serious consideration.
Centre-back has become less of an issue in my eyes after the recent improvement at the back as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny continue to form an impressive partnership. However, the report seems to think the boss still wants to add another defender to his ranks and will send scouts to run-the-rule over Swansea captain Ashley Williams again this weekend.

If we could strengthen those four areas this summer and keep the basis of the existing team together, we’ll have an excellent squad heading into next season. It seems like Wenger is making moves early and has identified his five main targets, and if we could land two or three of them we’ll have a great chance of ending our much-publicised trophy drought.
