As we approach the opening of the summer transfer window more and more players are being linked with a move to Arsenal. Here, ‘Gunner333’ assess the potential signings of Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini and David Alaba.
Wayne Rooney
Often criticised for his temperament and half-hearted approach to the game, Wayne Rooney has recently been linked with a move following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure with Arsenal reported to be leading the chase for his signature. A frontman has been the main focus in Arsenal’s potential summer spending and a player in this position doesn’t get much bigger than Wayne. Even though we require a true out-and-out goal-scorer and Rooney isn’t that sort of player, he still would be an excellent signing. He would get the fans excited ahead of next season and his signing would be a real statement of intent by Arsenal.
Verdict: His overall ability could even help us push for the league title next season.
Marouane Fellaini
I have spoken about the need for current Premier League proven talent and, along with Rooney, Fellaini is a player who fits the bill. His position also makes him a potentially crucial signing, with Arsenal always lacking a quality defensive midfield player since Song swapped life in North London for the Nou Camp. Fellaini’s aggressiveness and strength is something I don’t see any of our current players possessing. He is the overall golden package with this and his ability to pick out key passes and occasionally pop-up with the odd goal. With rumours suggesting we made a £22 million bid for the Belgian, it’s fingers crossed for Arsenal fans that we manage to pull this one off.
Verdict: A must buy
David Alaba
Defensive issues have always haunted Arsenal fans in the last few years but full backs have not usually been at the heart of the problem. This season though the left side was an area that has lacked depth until we signed Nacho Monreal in January. Reports last week claimed Arsenal were looking to buy Bayern Munich’s David Alaba with the view of playing him in his favoured central midfield role rather than left back – where he impressed last season. In my opinion, is not going to be a player who will light up the Premiership though. He is young and, despite having a lot of experience for his age, is not necessarily going to be a guaranteed star in midfield. There is no doubt Bayern will be looking for a lot of money for the young Austrian and to sign him for anything more than £10million would be a massive gamble.
Verdict: better options out there
