Manchester United On Verge Of Completing Stunning £80m Ronaldo Deal
Manchester United are on the verge of completing a stunning £80m deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this summer, according to reports today.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, could Cristiano Ronaldo be heading back to Man Utd?
Manchester United are on the verge of completing a stunning £80m deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this summer, according to reports today.
The Daily Star claim the champions made an official enquiry two weeks ago after learning that Real Madrid were inching closer to signing Gareth Bale from Tottenham, and the Spanish giants indicated they would be willing to sell the Portuguese superstar after he made it clear he’d be open to a return to England.
Ronaldo has just two years left to run on his current contract and is yet to agree terms over an extension. Madrid have always maintained the attacker would see out the rest of his career at the Bernabeu but the report claims that when president Florentino Perez approached him about committing to a new deal, he was left stunned when Ronaldo expressed an interest about returning to United instead.
It was this acknowledgement that forced Real into negotiations with United chief Ed Woodward as they know full-well that Ronaldo’s value would drop drastically next summer when he’d have just 12 months left to run on his contract.
The two clubs have been locked in negotiations over the past 12 days and the newspaper suggests an £80m deal is now close to being agreed with United confident they will lure the 28-year-old back to Old Trafford this summer.
Madrid’s apparent willingness to sell Ronaldo may also explain their determination to sign Bale, with the La Liga club expected to break the world transfer record to land the Welshman which would appease disgruntled fans when they learn Ronaldo could be on his way out.
The Star also claim that some of Ronaldo’s wages will be offset by United’s sponsor, American car giant General Motors, who will make the player their global ambassador.
It will certainly be a stunning coup if United manage to pull it off and would surely settle any nerves fans had following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. But nothing is official yet so we have to take this as speculation until we hear something concrete from the clubs.
