Liverpool Pre-Man Utd Team News: Rodgers Gives Latest On Suarez, Agger & Enrique
Liverpool take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the Capital One Cup. Here’s the latest team news for Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique.
Liverpool take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the third round of the Capital One Cup looking to get back to winning ways after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
Ahead of the game, boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking to Liverpoolfc.com and gave the latest team news including an update on the fitness of Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique, while Luis Suarez is also set to return to action.
Danish international Agger was substituted midway through the second half at the weekend due to a rib problem and Rodgers has revealed that the centre-back will be assessed on Tuesday before a decision is made over his involvement against United.
Agger’s replacement against the Saints was Enrique and Rodgers has also revealed that the Spaniard has been suffering from a minor problem in recent weeks and the club had hoped to give him a rest to protect him. Here’s what the Reds boss told the clubs official website.
“We’ll see how he [Agger] is for the game [against Manchester United],”
“He could be a doubt for that game as he has not quite recovered. We wanted to give him time at the weekend, but unfortunately he was struggling with his breathing because he got a knock to his ribs.
“But we’ll see. He’s a player who makes a good recovery and we’ll see over the next 24 hours how he gets on for the game on Wednesday.”
“We’ve had to taper his [Enrique] load in training because he’s had this niggle now for a few weeks and obviously we’re in a period where we have three games this week,” said Rodgers.
“We decided to miss him out at the weekend to allow him to be involved over these next couple of games.
“It was just unfortunate that Aly Cissokho was out with injury or else he would have been able to step in and Jose might have been able to rest that wee bit more.
“But he’s training and he’s fine. We just need to protect his load and the last thing we wanted to do was lose him.”
Rodgers is expected to rotate his squad for the game and he’s been boosted by the return of striker Luis Suarez, who is available again after completing his 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic last season, and while the Liverpool boss has confirmed the Uruguayan will be in the squad he’s yet to decide if he’ll start him.
“He certainly comes back into the squad and we’re delighted to have him,”
“It has been a really difficult time for him in terms of not playing games. But I’ve got to say, how he has prepared himself over the last number of weeks has been fantastic, with his attitude in training and everything.
“He’ll travel with us and we’ll reflect in the next 24 hours whether he starts or not. Having someone of that quality back into your squad gives everyone a lift.” Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com.
