Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms He Considered Man Utd Return Last Summer
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he considered rejoining Man Utd in the summer after receiving a barrage of calls from Rio Ferdinand begging him to come back.
With the January transfer window now open for business clubs will be working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Cristiano Ronaldo considered a return to Man Utd.
Manchester United have endured a difficult season so far under the stewardship of David Moyes but it could have been a lot different if Rio Ferdinand got his way in the summer, with Cristiano Ronaldo confirming that he considered rejoining United after the defender begged him to move back to Old Trafford, according to the Independent.
Ferdinand was quoted over the weekend as saying he was constantly on the phone to Ronaldo over the summer trying to persuade the 28-year-old to return to United, four years after moving to the Bernabeu.
The Portuguese captain became a legend at Old Trafford after scoring 118 goals in 292 appearances between 2003 and 2009 before making a then world record move to Madrid – where he’s continued his sensational form.
Ronaldo has now confirmed his former team-mate almost succeeded with his attempts after revealing he considered making a return to United, before ultimately deciding to sign a new deal at the Spanish giants.
The recently crowned Ballon d’Or winner was speaking after beating fierce rival Lionel Messi to the prestigious award in Zurich on Monday night, and when asked about Ferdinand’s attempts to lure him back to Old Trafford, he told reporters:
“It was true that Rio spoke to me a lot. Rio is a great friend of mine, we played many years together at Manchester United and we were neighbours when I was there in Manchester.
“He’s a fantastic guy and tried to change my mind. I did think about United. They are still in my heart. It’s a club where I played for six years and I love that club. I have a lot of friends there and I wish them the best.” Ronaldo is quoted as saying by the Independent.
It would certainly have been a huge coup had Ferdinand and United been able to pull it off. While many claim the defending champions have lost some of the ‘fear factor’ they’ve held for over 20 years, it would be a whole different story had Ronaldo been lining up alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie this season.
His signing would also have eased the pressure on David Moyes, who was criticised by some sections of supports for his lack of activity in the summer transfer window. However, with him signing a new deal at Real, it looks as though United have missed their chance to re-sign Ronaldo.
The attacker was certainly a worthy winner of the Ballon d’Or last night and his goal-scoring record at Madrid is simply unbelievable – scoring an incredible 230 goals in just 223 games.
