Tottenham Hotspur take on Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium this weekend looking to close in on the top four.
Ahead of the game Spurs boss Tim Sherwood has been speaking at his pre-match press conference and gave reporters a team news and injury update, including the latest on Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul, Andros Townsend and Sandro.
French centre-back Kaboul has been plagued by injuries over the past two years and has been restricted to just 9 games so far this season. His last appearance was back in November during Tottenham’s 6-0 drubbing to Manchester City but Sherwood has confirmed the defender is back in training and could be in contention to take on City at White Hart Lane on the 29th of January.
Vertonghen could also feature against the Citizens after returning to training this week following 10 games on the sidelines with an ankle injury picked up against Fulham in early December, but this weekend’s clash with the Swans will come too soon for the defenders.
However, midfielders Sandro and Townsend will be in contention to face the Capital One Cup holders after working on their fitness this week following return to training two weeks ago. Sherwood told The Tottenham Journal:
“They [Kaboul & Vertonghen] are not in contention for this Sunday [away at Swansea] but they’re back in training and they’re moving along nicely,”
“We have a break after this weekend so they should be in contention for that Man City game.
“Quite a lot will be in contention for the weekend. We’re happy with the numbers we have got and the strength of the squad going into this game on Sunday.
“Sandro and [Andros] Townsend are both training so they will certainly be in contention.”
Having Townsend and Sandro available against Swansea, and Vertonghen and Kaboul against City, will be a boost to Sherwood as he looks to continue a promising start to life in the hot-seat at the Lane. The inexperienced coach has seen his options limited by a number of injury problems, but he’s slowly getting his player back and that will only help the north Londoners cause as they push for a top-four finish.
