Liverpool Injury Latest: Rodgers Offers Update On Johnson, Leiva, Sakho + More
Liverpool entertain Swansea City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a team news and injury update from Brendan Rodgers on Leiva, Johnson, Enrique and Sakho.
Liverpool entertain Swansea City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with the Reds looking to close in on the top three.
Ahead of the game, boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday and gave Liverpoolfc.com a team news and injury update including the latest on the fitness of Lucas Leiva, Jose Enrique, Mamadou Sakho and Glen Johnson.
The good news is that right-back Johnson is back in the squad after a month on the sidelines. The 29-year-old was given an extended break in order to clear up some niggling injuries and hasn’t featured for the first team since the 18th January, but Rodgers has confirmed he’s now back in training and will be in the squad this weekend.
The Liverpool boss also revealed that centre-back Sakho is back training after recovering from a hamstring strain but he’s still around a week away from being back in contention, while Brazilian midfielder Leiva is well on the road to recovery from a knee injury, but he’s not going to be in the squad just yet.
However, there is some concern over the fitness of Enrique with the club sending him to America to see a specialist to finally try and clear up a long-standing knee injury, as the Spaniard is still ‘nowhere near’ making a comeback.
Rodgers told the clubs website:
“Glen has been back training,”
“According to him, he has felt as good as he has done for a long time – which is great. He has looked very good in training and he’ll come into the squad.
“Lucas Leiva is recovering very well but not in the squad. Sakho is still probably a week or so away, but he’s back on the field now with the rehabilitation team and working well.
“Apart from that, the squad is pretty much the same as it has been.”
“Jose Enrique has been out in America,”
“We’re looking to try to put an end to his injuries this season. We have sent him out to get some specialist advice on that. But he’s nowhere near playing yet.”
Liverpool head into the weekend action sitting three points clear in fourth and will hope to capatalise on any slips ups from the likes of Manchester City or Arsenal to move into the top three.
