Liverpool Handed Double Injury Boost Ahead Of Man Utd Game
Liverpool have been handed a double injury boost ahead of Sunday’s vital clash against Manchester United with two first team squad players returning to action.
Liverpool have been handed a double injury boost ahead of Sunday’s vital clash against Manchester United with both Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho set to return to the squad, according to the Mirror.
Leiva has been on the sidelines since suffering a serious knee injury during the closing stages of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on the 18th January, and was expected to be out for at least two months.
However, the Brazilian international midfielder has returned ahead of schedule and played a full 90 minutes for the Liverpool under-21 side during a 2-0 win over West Ham last week.
French centre-back Sakho also came through 70 minutes of that match after making his return from a hamstring injury that’s kept him on the sidelines since December.
Both players returned to full training with the rest of the Reds first team squad on Tuesday and the Mirror claim they are now fit and available for selection against Man Utd on Sunday.
The duo’s return will come as a welcome boost to Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers as he prepares to take his side to Old Trafford this weekend looking for a win that would not only take them a huge step closer to guaranteeing a top-four finish this season, but it would also keep alive their hope of landing an unlikely Premier League title.
However, neither Leiva nor Sakho are guaranteed to walk straight back into the Liverpool team as they have performed extremely well in their absence over the last couple of months. Steven Gerrard has excelled in a more defensive midfield role while Jordan Henderson has been a revelation alongside the skipper, so Leiva may find he has to bide his time before returning to the starting eleven.
Daniel Agger’s form has been less consistent at the back but Rodgers is unlikely to throw Sakho straight back into first team duties after such a long period on the sidelines.
