Chelsea Set To Rival Liverpool For £20m Attacker
Chelsea are set to rival Liverpool to the signing of £20m-rated Benfica attacker Lazar Markovic with both clubs expected to make their move this summer
As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea and Liverpool are linked with Lazar Markovic.
Chelsea are set to rival Liverpool to the signing of £20m-rated Benfica attacker Lazar Markovic this summer, according to the Mirror.
The 20-year-old has been hugely impressive since moving to Portugal last summer from Partizan Belgrade, scoring 5 goals in his 23 appearances so far.
However, it seems some of the Premier League big-guns are ready to try and lure him away after just one season with the Mirror claiming that Chelsea have now joined Liverpool in showing a keen interest in the winger with the pair being tipped to make formal moves at the end of the season.
The newspaper suggests Brendan Rodgers has been a long-term admirer of the players and wants him to be one of his key signings this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Champions League next year.
But Chelsea have also been on Markovic’s trail for some time and rumours in the players homeland have claimed that a deal to take him to Stamford Bridge is close to being completed.
Obviously those reports are unconfirmed at this time, but it will be interesting to see how Benfica would react should Chelsea or Liverpool table a formal bid this summer. The Portuguese club are not adverse to cashing in on their star men and it’s believed they would be prepared to let Markovic go if an offer of £20m came in.
Chelsea and Liverpool would easily be able to afford that kind of money and the Serbian international would be an exciting addition to either squad if a move did go through, so it will be an interesting battle if both clubs follow through with offers at the end of the season.
