Arsenal Ready To Do Battle With Chelsea Over La Liga Midfielder
Arsenal are ready to go head-to-head with Chelsea to try and lure Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira to the Premier League this summer, according to reports.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea and Arsenal are linked with Sami Khedira.
Arsenal are ready to go head-to-head with Chelsea to try and lure Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira to the Premier League this summer, according to reports.
Despite just splashing out £27m on Cesc Fabregas, the Daily Star claim that Jose Mourinho wants to be reunited with Khedira after signing the German international for Madrid during his time at the Bernabeu in 2010.
The Blues have just sold David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain so there’s a need to bring in another defensive-minded midfielder and it’s understood the 27-year-old is Mourinho’s top target.
However, it seems the west Londoners are going to face stiff competition from Arsenal with the newspaper suggesting that Arsene Wenger is also keen on luring Khedira to England as he looks to bring in a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta.
The French boss is expected to be busy in this summers window as he tries to build a squad capable of pushing for the Premier League title next season and a defensive midfielder is a top priority.
The Star state that Chelsea are currently considered the favourites, but Arsenal shouldn’t be discounted, particularly as they have Khedira’s close friend Mesut Ozil already in their ranks and I’m sure Wenger would be keen for the playmaker to try and persuade his compatriot to join him at the Emirates.
Khedira missed the majority of the second part of last season with a serious knee injury but he recovered in time to start in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, and he’s now hoping to play a key role in Germany’s World Cup campaign.
While he’s still considered an important player in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, Khedira’s future at Madrid is uncertain as he’s only got one year remaining on his current contract and with no extension agreed as yet, the La Liga giants are going to have to either cash in this summer or risk losing him for nothing in 12 months time.
