As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are hoping to win the race for Sami Khedira.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hopes pip rivals Arsenal and Liverpool to the €19m signing of German international midfielder Sami Khedira, according to reports today.
Khedira has been a regular for Real Madrid since Mourinho took him to the Bernabeu from Stuttgart four years ago, but having been virtually ever-present in recent seasons, the midfielder missed a large portion of last year with a serious knee injury.
He returned in time to play in the Champions League final in place of the suspended Xabi Alonso, but in his absence the Spaniard forged an impressive partnership in the middle of the park alongside Luka Modric during the second half of last season and recent reports have suggested that Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear he can find a new club this summer.
Khedira has just one year remaining on his current deal at Madrid and it’s believed that talks over an extension have hit a dead end and it’s led to speculation of a move to the Premier League this summer.
The Daily Star reported last week that Liverpool had tabled a €19m (£15m) bid for the 27-year-old but it remains to be seen whether those reports have any foundation, while Arsenal have also been strongly linked with a move for the player this summer as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a defensive midfielder.
However, it appears the pair will have to fight off some stiff competition from Chelsea with the Mirror claiming today that Jose Mourinho wants to link-up with the player again and has identified him as the idea replacement for David Luiz – who has been sold to PSG.
The report suggests that the Blues will be willing to offer Khedira a sizeable increase on his current £3m-per-season deal and are now eyeing up a €19m (£15m) move themselves. The German international held a positive relationship with Mourinho at Madrid so the Blues boss is likely to be confident of being able to persuade the player to opt for Stamford Bridge over the Emirates or Anfield.
Khedira would certainly be something of a coup if Chelsea could pull it off and he’d provide the powerful presence that Mourinho likes to have in front of his defence alongside Serbian international Nemanja Matic.
