Chelsea appear to have missed out on the signing of Luke Shaw with the defender heading up north to undergo a medical with Manchester United on Friday ahead of a €34m move to Old Trafford, according to reports today.

Shaw has emerged as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe after an excellent season at Southampton that saw him edge out Ashley Cole for a place in Roy Hodgson’s England World Cup squad, and he impressed during the Three Lions dead rubber draw with Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been strongly linked with the 18-year-old this summer with Jose Mourinho on the look-out for a replacement for Ashley Cole while Louis van Gaal is also needing a left-back following Alex Buttner’s move to Dinamo Moscow.

Until now, neither club had been able to strike a deal with the Saints as they’ve been reluctant to sell any more players until a new full-time manager was installed.

However, with Ronald Koeman now at the helm, widespread reports this evening claim that after seeing several bids rejected, United have finally agreed a fee with the Daily Star believing the deposed champions will pay €34m (£27m) up front with the fee potentially rising to €42.5m (£34m) with add ons – although other reports say it’s a straight £30m deal.

The newspaper suggests that Shaw is now heading to Manchester and will undergo a medical on Friday before putting pen-to-paper on a lucrative long-term contract.

If the deal gets over the line, Shaw would become the second big-money signing through the door at Old Trafford in quick succession following on from Ander Herrera’s arrival this afternoon, and it would be another statement of intent from the club after a difficult last 12 months.

United slumped to a disappointing 7th-placed finish last season so fans will be pleased to see the club splashing some cash to try and build a squad capable of competing for at least a top-four finish next year.
