Liverpool Set To Take Spending Past £100m As Ayre Flies Out To Seal Double Swoop
Liverpool look set to take their spending past the £100m mark after Ian Ayre flew out to Spain to wrap up deals for Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo.
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Liverpool close in on a double swoop.
Liverpool look set to take their spending past the £100m mark after Ian Ayre flew out to Spain to wrap up deals for Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo, according to the Telegraph.
The Reds were heavily linked with Moreno earlier in the summer after Brendan Rodgers identified the 21-year-old as his key target to solve his problems at left-back this season.
Any potential move stalled after the Merseysiders failed to agree a fee with Sevilla but the Telegraph claim that Liverpool have renewed their interest and are now closing in on a £16m deal after chief executive Ian Ayre travelled to Spain to tie up the transfer.
Moreno is regarded as one of Spain’s most promising young defenders and has already clocked up over 60 appearances for Sevilla over the past two seasons, while he narrowly missed out on a place in Vicente Del Bosque’s Spanish World Cup squad this summer.
If this deal goes through, Moreno will battle it out with Jose Enrique for the left-back role this season with his compatriot fit again having missed most of last year with a serious knee injury.
And Rodgers could have two new defenders at his disposal as the Telegraph also claim that Ayre will wrap up a loan deal for Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo with the Anfield club hoping to secure an option to make the move permanent next summer.
Manquillo was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool last month and it appears the Merseysiders are now ready to finalise the deal with the 20-year-old set to come in to offer competition to Glen Johnson at right-back.
If both deals go through smoothly, it will take Liverpool’s spending beyond the £100m mark following the arrivals of Emre Can, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi this summer.
However, the spending may not be finished yet as Rodger’s is still believed to be in the market for another striker after a deal for Loic Remy collapsed last weekend, so it will be interesting to see who the Northern Irishman goes for.

It’s certainly been an exciting summer in the transfer market for Reds fans and although they lost their top scorer Luis Suarez, they have added some much-needed depth to the squad and Rodgers will hope that will be able to make up for the loss of the controversial Uruguayan this coming season as they look to go one better and win the Premier League title.
