Man Utd Line-Up Shock £20m Raid On Rivals Liverpool
Manchester United are considering a shock £20m move for Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen after Louis van Gaal identified the Welshman as a potential target.
The summer transfer window is now reaching its climax and managers are working hard to make some last minute additions to their squad, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Manchester United are linked with Liverpool’s Joe Allen.
Manchester United are considering a shock £20m move for Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen after Louis van Gaal identified the Welshman as a potential target, according to reports.
United have endured a disappointing start to life under van Gaal and crashed out of the Capital One Cup with a humiliating 4-0 defeat to MK Dons on Tuesday night.
The result only further highlighted the clubs need to bring in new additions before the transfer window closes next week and while the former champions have been linked with the likes of Arturo Vidal this summer, the Daily Star seem to think van Gaal is now ready to turn his attention to Liverpool’s Joe Allen.
The newspaper claims that United are considering launching a shock £20m bid for the midfielder after sending scouts to watch the 24-year-old in action during Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Monday night, while van Gaal is also understood to have been impressed with the players performance for Wales during a 2-0 defeat to Holland in June.
United were supposedly interested in Allen when he left Swansea for Merseyside in 2012 but were put off by his £15m price-tag. However, with the Red Devils desperate to bring in another midfielder over the coming days, the Star suggest that van Gaal has instructed chief executive Ed Woodward to investigate the possibility of signing the Welshman.
Allen hasn’t really established himself as a vital part of Brendan Rodgers first team since moving to Anfield two years ago and his place has come under even more threat following the signing of German youngster Emre Can, and it appears United are ready to offer him a more prominent role.
It would certainly be a huge surprise if anything came of this as players rarely transfer between United and Liverpool, such is their fierce rivalry. The last player to move from Anfield to Old Trafford was Allenby Chilton 76 years ago, so it’s sure to cause some unrest if Allen was to make the switch this summer.

However, I really don’t think Liverpool fans have anything to worry about as there’s very little chance a deal will happen. Rodgers won’t want to do business with United and although Allen may not be the first name on the team-sheet, he’s still a useful player to have around the squad.
