The agent of Radamel Falcao has made contact with Chelsea to discuss a potential move to Stamford Bridge after Manchester United rejected the chance to sign him on a permanent basis, according to reports today.
Falcao has just endured a nightmare debut season in the Premier League after scoring just four goals in 29 appearances during his year-long loan spell at Manchester United.
It was no surprise when Louis van Gaal confirmed after United’s 0-0 draw at Hull City on the final day of the season that the club wouldn’t be taking up the option to sign the Colombian hitman on a permanent basis.
Falcao will now head back to Monaco but the Mirror are one of several media outlets who claim that the 29-year-old is keen to remain in the Premier League and would ideally like to move to a top club in London.
Arsenal were linked with Falcao before he joined United last summer but it’s understood they are unlikely to renew their interest which leaves Chelsea as the players only realistic hope of staying in the Premier League.
The newspaper suggests that Falcao is ‘desperate’ to make the move to Stamford Bridge and his agent, Jorge Mendes, is believed to have already opened preliminary talks with Chelsea officials about a potential deal.
Jose Mourinho is on the look-out for another striker to replace the departing Didier Drogba and the Blues boss shares the same agent as Falcao, which could prove crucial in any potential move.
A major stumbling block could be the players wages, as Falcao is currently on £265,000-a-week and Chelsea’s top earner is Eden Hazard on £200,000-a-week. However, the Mirror claim that Falcao is so keen to join the Premier League champions that he’s willing to take a substantial pay cut to make the deal happen.
It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to persuade Mourinho into taking a punt on the beleaguered Colombian international as he’s looked a shadow of the player that was once regarded as one of the deadliest hitmen in world football.
Prior to his move to United, Falcao had scored 200 goals in 305 career appearances and his records at Porto and Atletico Madrid in particular were hugely impressive.

A serious knee injury in 2013 saw him ruled out for a year and he was clearly not 100% fit during his time at Old Trafford, so if Chelsea could get the striker’s fitness and confidence back, then we may yet see the best of Falcao again.
However, it will be a huge risk for Mourinho to take so I’d personally be surprised if the West Londoners took a chance on the South American this summer.
