Manchester United will look secure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League when they face Wolfsburg on Tuesday night.

United arrive in Germany sitting second in Group B – one point behind leaders Wolfsburg – following a 0-0 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven two weeks ago.

The Dutch outfit remain third and just a single point adrift of Louis van Gaal’s men so only victory tonight will ensure United secure safe progress to the last 16.

A draw or defeat for United at the Volkswagen Arena coupled with a win for PSV at home to CSKA Moscow would see the Red Devils drop to third and in to the Europa League.

The good news for United is that Wolfsburg have lost their last seven meetings with English opposition, with the most recent coming with a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford back in September.

However, the Bundesliga side have developed in to a fine team over the past 18 months and have lost just four of their last 42 games at home, so it’s going to be a tough task for van Gaal’s men this evening.

United warmed up for the game with a disappointing 0-0 draw with West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday which saw them slip to fourth in the Premier League so the pressure is mounting on van Gaal to get his players firing in front of goal.

Team News

United have been hit by a major injury blow with the news that Wayne Rooney has failed to make the trip after being ruled out with an ankle injury that he picked up last week.

Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is also missing after being forced off against West Ham with a hip problem so Michael Carrick should start alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in the middle of the park.

Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones are also still missing through injury but Paddy McNair has been included in the squad despite being forced off at the weekend with an ankle injury.

Wolfsburg 1-1 Man Utd: United have been woeful in front of goal in recent weeks and this is going to be a real test for them this evening. Wolfsburg are a decent side, especially at home, and I don’t see them losing this game. I’m going for a 1-1 draw, leaving United needing a favour from CSKA in the groups other game.
