Premier League race – looking at the betting favourites
With another exciting Premier League title race ahead of us we take a closer look at the current three favourites, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool
Last year Leicester surprised everyone with a Premier League win that the bookies definitely did not see coming at the beginning of the season. The underdogs were 5000/1 in August 2015 but that did not stop them being successful. It seems less likely that there will be a surprise this year with most of the usual big names in the frame for success.
At the time of writing, Manchester City are 10/11 to win the Premier League outright with Liverpool at 4/1 and Arsenal at 6/1. Let’s take a closer look at these three challengers. You may not get great value on any of these bets, with such short odds, buy you do great entertainment value from watching any of these fancied teams play.
Manchester City
City have undergone fluctuating fortunes over the years. They had a very successful period in the late 1960s and early 1970s but then their fortunes started to decline and they lived in the shadows of Manchester United. Since being purchased in 2008 by Abu Dhabi United Group, Manchester City have seen their star begin to rise again. The team achieved Premier League wins in 2012 and 2014 and are currently up there at the top of the table under new boss Pep Guardiola.
Liverpool
Liverpool are a football club that has a proud history of success over the years, but is yet to win the Premier League title. This is something of a failure for a team which won 18 league titles back in the day. The arrival of Jürgen Klopp seems to have heralded a new period of optimism at the club. In his first season in charge Klopp managed the team to the finals of the Football League Cup and UEFA Europa League. Although Liverpool were not successful in winning either competition they do seem to be in the best position for a long while, to achieve success in the Premier League. At 4/1, Liverpool are a solid bet for the title this year.
Arsenal
It’s twenty years since manager Arsène Wenger took up the reins at the club and the team has played some impressive football under his management. They are one of only six teams to be Premier League champions since its foundation, although the last time they were victorious was back in 2003/04 season. It remains to be seen whether the Gunners will end the season by justifying the short odds you can get on them and lifting the Premier League trophy. Victory over Swansea on Saturday saw the north Londoners move joint top of the table so best odds of 11/2 make Arsenal a tempting proposition.
