Man City and Man United to dominate summer window

If the start of the off-season is anything to go by, the two Manchester clubs are going to be the busiest this summer in the Premier League. The transfer window is just weeks away from opening, and both clubs have already been linked with a host of players.

Neither club neared their expectation of challenging for the title last season, with City falling 15 points short of champions Chelsea, and United 24. Nevertheless, with a big summer predicted ahead for both clubs, the bookies have got them down as favourites again for the title, alongside the Blues. Both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have already made some early inroads. The City boss has already announced the signings of keeper Ederson Moraes and attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva, whilst Mourinho has sealed a deal for Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelof.

However, it’s clear that neither boss is done and dusted just yet. Mourinho is clearly in the market for a deep-lying midfielder, with both Eric Dier and Fabinho being linked most recently. Whilst it’s highly unlikely that Spurs will allow Dier to leave, Fabinho could be a very realistic addition for close to £40m.

The Portuguese manager is also eyeing up a replacement for the outgoing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He’s getting ready to raid his old club, Real Madrid, for out-of-favour Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. That looks likely to be completed, whilst Mourinho is also interested in a deal for winger Ivan Perisic.

Guardiola, meanwhile, is keen to bolster his back-line and is currently working on bringing in Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker. That deal should be completed early on, while a deal for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk could also be thrashed out.

There’s always one transfer saga which gets dragged out throughout a whole window, and this year the player in question could be Alexis Sanchez. He’s reportedly keen on a move to Manchester City, but Arsene Wenger doesn’t want to sell to a Premier League rival. Rumours suggest that Bayern Munich could be interested, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Whatever happens, both Manchester clubs are clearly looking to invest heavily yet again. Nevertheless, we saw last year that money doesn’t always correlate to success, with both clubs topping the spending charts in 2016.
