Liverpool vs Chelsea: Betting preview for Super Cup clash
The Super Cup takes place in Istanbul this evening as European champions Liverpool take on Europa League holders Chelsea at the Vodafone Park stadium.
The Super Cup takes place in Istanbul this evening as European champions Liverpool take on Europa League holders Chelsea at the Vodafone Park stadium.
Liverpool saw their bid to win their first Premier League title fall agonisingly short as they finished one point behind Manchester City last season despite amassing an incredible 97 points over the 38 games.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s men still ensured it was an unforgettable campaign as they won their sixth European Cup after beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid.
The Reds endured a disappointing pre-season but they’ve started the Premier League campaign where they left off last year after beating Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield on Friday night so they should be full of confidence this evening.
The same cannot be said of Chelsea. The Blues won the Europa League with a 4-1 win over Arsenal back in May but it was a summer of change at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard came in to replace Maurizio Sarri as manager.
It was a baptism of fire for the former midfielder as he saw his Chelsea side thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford in his first game as a Premier League manager so Lampard will be looking for a response from his players tonight.
Team news
Liverpool are expected to recall Sadio Mane to the starting eleven after he wasn’t risked from the start aginst Norwich having arrived late to pre-season following his exploits at the AFCON.
However, Liverpool have suffered a blow ahead of the game as Naby Keita limped out of training with a muscle problem last night while Alisson Becker is facing at least 3 weeks out with a calf injury.
Chelsea are also sweating over the fitness of N’Golo Kante after he picked up a knock against United on Sunday while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out with an Achilles injury.
Antonio Rudiger and Willian are only fit enough for places on the bench but Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso are pushing for starts.
Betting Odds
Liverpool come into the match as the heavy 1.58 favourites to win the game while Chelsea are available at odds of 5.03 which seems like huge odds for the Europa League holders. If you fancy the game to go to extra time, then the draw can be backed at 3.88.
We usually see plenty of goals in the Super Cup as only once in the last seven games has there been less than 2.5 goals scored and I think we’ll see that trend continue this evening. You can back over 2.5 match goals at odds of 1.66.
Both teams to score also seems like a solid wager at 1.7. Liverpool have one of the best attacks in Europe while Chelsea will fancy their chances of scoring against a defence that conceded at home to Norwich and was less than rock solid in pre-season.
However, I can only see one winner tonight and that’s Liverpool. Klopp side should prove to be far too strong for this Chelsea team and I can see the Merseysiders easing to a 3-1 victory which can be backed at odds of 10.82.
