Man Utd showing strong interest in Tottenham target Toney

Manchester United are reportedly showing strong interest in trumping Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, as per Caught Offside.

The 30-year-old showed his productivity in the Premier League for Brentford, scoring 21 goals and registering five assists in 35 appearances during the 2022/23 campaign.

Since moving to the Saudi Pro League in 2024, he has continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess, scoring 30 goals and registering five assists across all competitions in his debut season.

Last season, he netted 40 goals and notched up 11 assists in 48 appearances in all tournaments. Toney has even won two AFC Champions League Elite trophies and a Saudi Super Cup with Al-Ahli in recent years.

The Englishman has even enjoyed a stellar start this season, scoring 13 goals and notching up two assists in 14 matches across all competitions.

Now, Caught Offside state that following Benjamin Sesko’s recent fitness problems, Man Utd are prioritising signing a new striker in January. They don’t want to buy an expensive young No.9; instead, they are looking for a loan or cheap experienced options.

Initially, United identified Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a serious target, but Leeds United are close to extending his deal. So, Michael Carrick’s side have cooled their interest in him.

Toney to Man Utd

Man Utd also have a strong interest in Toney, with the player open to returning to the Premier League, although he is currently happy in the Middle East.

The report state that United will have to overcome stiff competition to sign Toney, as Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham are also in this race. As a result, Man Utd have lined up Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ollie Watkins as potential alternative options.

Tottenham decided to reinforce the striker position by signing Omar Marmoush this summer, but the Egyptian isn’t a natural striker. Instead, he likes to be deployed in a withdrawn role.

Toney is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, the former Brentford star might be a shrewd short-term acquisition for the Old Trafford club or the North London club should either club eventually opt to secure his services in January or next summer.
