Seven Days @ Spurs: “…feeling rather Blue…”

Tottenham Hotspur fan Steve Jennings gives us his latest installment of his ‘Seven days @ Spurs’ series, where he sums up the weeks events at White Hart Lane.

Being a Spurs fan is awfully difficult. Our side tricks us into thinking we’re on the up, before throwing a 1-0 lead away in stoppage time, sending us tumbling back down to earth feeling rather Blue – especially on this occasion.

Everton away was always going to be a tough one. Before our trip to Fulham last weekend, I predicted that we’d beat one of Fulham or Everton, and lose to the other.

We’d performed reasonably well against Panathinaikos in mid-week. A 3-1 victory saw us go through to the knockout stages of the Europa League. Clint Dempsey added another impressive performance, whilst Emmanuel Adebayor’s goal would have given the striker some much needed confidence.

Andre Villas-Boas decided to stick with Dempsey (replacing the injured Bale on the left), whilst once again pairing Adbebayor with the in-form Jermain Defoe up top. Neither striker played fantastically well at Goodison Park, but Dempsey’s deflected strike had given Spurs the lead.

With 90 minutes gone, it looked like Tottenham had just done enough to earn all three points. Quick fire goals from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic quickly changed that.

Since he took charge, I’ve been unsure about a few of AVB’s substitutions. These changes are often made to hold on to a lead. In my opinion, oppositions often need to be stretched when 1-0 down. Bringing on a legless Tom Huddlestone never seems to do any good.

It’s a huge shame that Michael Dawson is out injured currently. Spurs lack a leader. The sooner Dawson, Parker and Kaboul are back, the sooner Spurs will gain a backbone.

Spurs now have a promising run of games. With Gareth Bale back in the side, AVB’s men should push on and gain some momentum now. Everton are a good side; Tottenham fans needn’t get so down-heartened. The race for fourth place is still very much ON.
