PFA Chief Confirms Suarez Has Asked For Help In Pushing Through Arsenal Move

PFA chief Gordon Taylor has confirmed that Luis Suarez has asked them to help settle his dispute with Liverpool that will see him secure a move to Arsenal.

With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, the PFA have confirmed they are trying to resolve Luis Suarez’s dispute with Liverpool.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has confirmed to talkSPORT that Luis Suarez has asked them to help settle his dispute with Liverpool that will see him secure a move to Arsenal.

The Uruguayan striker spoke out for the first time in an interview with the Telegraph today accusing Liverpool of refusing to let him join the Gunners despite having a written agreement in his contract that states he can join a club in the Champions League this summer if they submit a fee over £40m.

Liverpool insist no such clause exists, and under the terms of the contract he signed last summer, the club only have to inform the player if a bid of £40m or more is tabled and that figure is seen as a starting point for negotiations, should they wish to sell.

In his interview with the Telegraph, Suarez confirmed he’s willing to hand in a transfer request and take his case to the Premier League, but Taylor has revealed that the 26-year-old has asked the PFA for guidance on how to settle the dispute amicably.

Taylor feels clauses in contracts need to be much clearer as they can be interpreted in different ways by lawyers, as is the case with Suarez. He told talkSPORT this morning:

“These buy-out clauses have caused no end of problems in the past and they continue to do so because of the way they were drafted at the time,” he said.

“He believes the £40m amount that is mentioned, if that is offered that gives him the right to go.

Liverpool, from their side, are saying that is a minimum figure from which they will consider negotiation and of course they will want to keep the player, unless they replace the player with someone as good or better, which is not going to be easy in a short period of time.

“We have raised this issue with the Premier League, that buy-out clauses should have a great deal more clarity because I’ve never seen one yet that hasn’t caused trouble.

“It’s also down to discussions Luis had with the manager as well and of course you have the owners involved.

“There are different ways it can be interpreted. If it goes to the Premier League it will take time and the window is then closed. It is a delicate situation and we are trying to help.

“We have been asked to try and help to sort the situation out and we have been trying to do that.

“The lad has had a chequered past but he is also an extremely good footballer and this is about a situation on the interpretation of a contract.

“You want contracts to be straight forward and clear and on this issue it is not clear. It is open to different interpretation by lawyers so, at the end of the day, it is about if an agreement can be reached.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how Liverpool respond to Suarez’s interview and it seems this saga is likely to drag out until the end of the transfer window with Brendan Rodgers likely to do all he can to prevent Suarez from joining a top-four rival like Arsenal.
