Lewandowski Confirms Chelsea & Man Utd Interest
Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he snubbed moves to Premier League giants Manchester Utd and Chelsea during recent transfer windows
With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Robert Lewandowski confirms interest from England.
Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he has had the chance to join Manchester United and Chelsea during recent transfer windows, according to Sky Sports News.
The Poland international has emerged as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, with his goals helping Dortmund lift the Bundesliga title in 2011/12 season while a sensational four-goal display against Real Madrid lead the club to the final of the Champions League last term.
The 25-year-old has now revealed than then Real manager Jose Mourinho spoke to him after that game last season and Sky Sports claim the Portuguese coach tried to persuade the striker to follow him to whatever club he was managing this season – which ultimately turned out to be Chelsea.
“Yes, there was a situation like this with Jose Mourinho but I wouldn’t like to talk about it much,” he said.
“It was a private conversation so I don’t want to make big things out of it. I can confirm I spoke to him.
“We spoke a few times before. I have his number in my phone. It is a huge compliment for me that a manager with such a big name is texting me this way.
“It is always nice to talk to him but it is not the first time I had such a situation.” Lewandowski told Sky Sports
The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Lewandowski in recent weeks but despite Mourinho’s best efforts to entice him to west London, the player has decided to see out his contract with Dortmund with a view to securing a free transfer move to Bayern Munich next summer when his contract expires.
The Polish hitman also revealed that former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson called him about a potential move to Old Trafford last summer, but again the striker decided to stay in Germany. He continued:
“One year earlier I also spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson and that was definitely a great feeling,” the forward admitted.
“The retirement of Sir Alex didn’t affect my decision not to come to England. He spoke to me one year ago. It was not at a good time.
“I knew I still had something big to achieve in Dortmund before I joined a bigger club.”
So unfortunately Lewandowski has twice rejected the chance to move to the Premier League and it’s unlikely we’ll see him here any time soon as he’s set to join Bayern Munich next summer. Manchester United fans may not be too disappointed they missed out last summer as they ended up buying Robin van Persie instead, but it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will sign a big-name striker before the window closes in 8 days time.
