Transfer News: Big Guns Battle Over €30m-Rated Midfielder
Liverpool and Manchester United have joined rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for €30m-rated Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, according to reports.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, the race for Sami Khedira hots up.
Liverpool and Manchester United have joined rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for €30m-rated Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, according to reports.
The German midfielder is expected to leave the Bernabeu this summer after being told by boss Carlo Ancelotti that he no longer figures in his first team plans for next season, and with just one year remaining on his current deal, the club want to cash-in now rather than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months.
Khedira was an integral part of the Madrid set-up during his first three years at the club but missed practically the entire second half of last season with a serious knee injury and in his absence, Luka Modric struck up an excellent partnership alongside Xabi Alonso in the centre of the park, so it seems his prolonged spell on the sidelines could have cost Khedira his future at the club.
Understandably, the 27-year-old isn’t short of offers and it appears several of the ‘big guns’ from England are keen on luring the defensive midfielder to the Premier League.
Arsenal and Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for the German international this summer with reports suggesting that the Gunners were lining-up a £16m bid, while Jose Mourinho is also understood to be desperate to be reunited with the midfielder after signing him for Madrid back in 2010.
However, the London duo look like they will now face some familiar competition with the report claiming that Liverpool and Man Utd have joined the chase for Khedira’s signature, with both Brendan Rodgers and Louis van Gaal said to be keen on adding him to their squads this summer.
It’s certainly gearing up to be an exciting race and it will be interesting to see where the German ends up. Arsenal could do with a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, Chelsea need to find another defensive midfielder to replace David Luiz, Liverpool are also likely to add more bite to their midfield with Steven Gerrard not getting any youngster, while United are giving their squad an entire overhaul after a disappointing season, and Khedira would be an excellent addition for any of the quartet.
However, I’m sure there will also be clubs from Europe interested and it looks like any potential suitor will have to be prepared to dig deep, as the Daily Star claim it will take an offer of €30m to persuade Madrid to sell this summer.

That sounds like a lot for a player who has just one year remaining on his contract but there’s no doubt Khedira is a class talent, and some club out there will be willing to pay that figure. We’ll just have to see if that club comes from England or not.
