Man Utd Handed Quadruple Injury Boost Ahead Of Key Chelsea Clash
Man Utd have been handed a quadruple injury boost with Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling all set to make their comebacks from injury
Manchester United have been handed a quadruple injury boost with Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling all set to make their comebacks from injury, according to the Mirror.
United have been plagued by a number of injuries this season with boss Louis van Gaal regularly without at least eight players on match-days during the opening weeks.
However, it looks like the international break has come at a good time for the former champions as many of those absentees have been able to step up their recoveries and are now closing in first team returns.
One of those who has been on the sidelines is summer signing Ander Herrera after he picked up a rib injury during United’s 2-1 win over West Ham on September 27th.
It was initially feared the Spaniard was facing a month out, however, the Mirror claim that the injury isn’t as bad as first thought and with Herrera now feeling no pain, the 24-year-old is poised to return to action sooner than expected.
There’s a chance the midfielder could feature against West Brom on Monday but van Gaal may decide to hold him back so he’s fresh to face Chelsea next Sunday.
In a further boost, Michael Carrick is also set to make his first team return after coming through a behind closed doors friendly at United training ground. The 33-year-old hasn’t played yet this season after requiring surgery on an ankle injury he picked up in pre-season, so his return will be a major fillip to van Gaal.
The Mirror claim that Carrick is expected to be on the bench against West Brom and could then start against Chelsea the following week if all goes to plan.
One of van Gaal’s biggest problems this season has been in defence but those concerns are easing as Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are also set to be in contention to face West Brom on Monday.
Jones has been out since picking up a hamstring injury while playing for England at the start of September while Smalling has been out with a thigh problem, but they are now set to be available to face the Baggies.
The return of these four first team players will come as a welcome boost to van Gaal ahead of a run of key fixtures that sees the Red Devils take on Chelsea and Manchester City following Monday’s trip to the Hawthorns.
