Liverpool Trying To Hijack Man Utd’s Deal For £22m Attacker
Liverpool are trying to hijack Manchester United’s proposed move for unsettled Barcelona attacker Pedro Rodriguez, according to Mundo Deportivo.
With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, more on the future of Pedro….
Liverpool are trying to hijack Manchester United’s proposed move for unsettled Barcelona attacker Pedro Rodriguez, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Pedro has dedicated his entire career so far to Barcelona and has racked up over 300 appearances for the Catalans having risen through the youth ranks before breaking into the first team squad in 2008.
The 27-year-old appeared to commit his future to the Nou Camp after signing a new four-year contract extension last month but the player confirmed last week that the new deal saw his buy-out clause reduce from £106m to a far more affordable £22m [via the Express].
This has led to intense speculation he could be set for a move this summer and Manchester United emerged as the front-runners for his signature with Spanish outlet El Confidential claiming earlier this week that the Red Devils were close to wrapping up a £22m deal.
The Metro then reported that Pedro had informed friends he was set to move to Old Trafford and Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets confirmed his team-mate is considering a move away in order to get more first team action [via the Guardian].
However, there could yet be a late twist as Mundo Deportivo are claiming today that Liverpool are still in the running for Pedro’s signature and are making real efforts to hijack United’s proposed deal for the player.
Brendan Rodgers has been extremely busy in the transfer market already this summer and wrapped-up his seventh new addition with the signing of Christian Benteke yesterday.
But it looks like the Northern Irishman hasn’t concluded his transfer business yet and I can only assume that Rodgers is viewing Pedro as a potential replacement for Raheem Sterling following his move to Manchester City.
Like Sterling, Pedro can play anywhere across the front three attacking positions and even through the middle as a central striker so it would make sense if Liverpool were hoping to bring him in to replace the departed England international.
However, as it stands, I’d still say United are in pole position to land Pedro as they have more financial muscle and are able to offer the Spanish international Champions League football.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but I think whoever ends up signing him will have picked up one of the bargains of the summer as landing a player of Pedro’s quality and experience for £22m is an absolute steal.
