Manchester United crashed out of the Capital One Cup after losing 3-1 on penalties to Middlesbrough after they played out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Boro started well and Sergio Romero was forced in to an early save to deny Friend while the Argentine international was also called in to action to deny Downing from long-range just before half time.

United finally came alive during the latter stages of the game with Lingard going close in the 89th minute while Fellaini somehow managed to miss from point blank range extra time – although the midfielder thought he should have had a penalty.

Pereira then went close to stealing it before Martial missed a golden opportunity to win it for the Red Devils with a last minute header.

But the game went to penalties and Rooney, Carrick and Young all missed their spot kicks as Middlesbrough won 3-1 to progress to the last eight.
