Arsenal are ready to gazump Tottenham and Chelsea by launching a late swoop for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley during the closing days of the transfer window, according to a report in the Express.
Barkley has been with Everton his entire career having progressed through the youth ranks to become a first team regular but his future at Goodison Park is in serious doubt.
The 23-year-old has just one year left on his contract and he’s made it clear he won’t sign an extension so boss Ronald Koeman has indicated he will cash-in if a suitable offer arrives.
The Telegraph reported on Friday that Tottenham and Chelsea are still hoping to sign Barkley in a cut-price £25m deal despite the midfielder suffering a hamstring injury in training last week.
Spurs and Chelsea have been tracking Barkley all summer and the newspaper suggests they are ready to do-battle over the England international as they expect Everton to lower their initial £50m asking price.
Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte are both expected to sign a number of players over the coming days and Barkley would represent an excellent piece of business if either club could snap him up for just £25m.
However, it looks as though they are going to face some fresh competition as the Express claims Arsenal will launch a late bid to try and beat their rivals to Barkley’s signature.
The newspaper cites a report from Transfer Market Web that says Arsene Wenger is eyeing Barkley as a potential long-term replacement for Santi Cazorla and is poised to make his move before the end of the month.

It’s gearing-up to be a fascinating battle between the three London giants and I think Barkley would be a superb addition for whoever ends up winning the race for his signature.
