Arsenal & Chelsea Plotting Late Bids But £70m Star Favours Liverpool Move
Arsenal and Chelsea are plotting late bids for Virgil van Dijk but the £70m-rated Southampton defender still favours a move to Liverpool this summer
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final days of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Virgil van Dijk…
Arsenal and Chelsea are plotting late bids for Virgil van Dijk but the £70m-rated Southampton defender still favours a move to Liverpool this summer, according to the Independent.
Van Dijk’s future at St Mary’s has been in doubt since he was exiled from the squad by boss Mauricio Pellegrino after handing in a formal transfer request back in July.
The 26-year-old was initially strongly linked with a move to Liverpool but the proposed switch was derailed after Southampton reported the Reds to the Premier League for tapping-up the player.
Jurgen Klopp is still hoping to land the Dutch international and the Independent claim van Dijk remains keen to move to Anfield as it’s by far his preferred destination.
However, Southampton are adamant they won’t sell to the Merseysiders and this has opened the door to Liverpool’s rivals as the newspaper says Arsenal and Chelsea are now plotting last minute bids for van Dijk.
Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte are expected to be extremely active during the final days of the window and van Dijk would obviously be a sensational signing if either club could get a deal agreed.
But the Independent claim it would take an offer of at least £70m to tempt Southampton in to a sale and if the Saints did accept an offer from the London duo then it would allow Liverpool the opportunity to match it.
Given van Dijk favours a move to Merseyside, it means Liverpool would actually welcome Arsenal or Chelsea having an offer accepted as that would pave the way for them to renew their interest.

It’s going to be a fascinating final few days of the transfer window but I think we’re going to see van Dijk move in the end and I have a feeling he’ll be a Liverpool player come September 1st.
