Liverpool Free To Sign Attacker In £61m Deal But Klopp’s Hesitance Could Be Costly

Monaco are willing to sell Thomas Lemar for £61m this month but Liverpool’s hesitance to push through a deal could see him end up at Arsenal

The January transfer window is now open so clubs are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season and put deals in place for the summer. Today, the latest on Thomas Lemar…

Monaco are now willing to sell Thomas Lemar for £61m this month but Jurgen Klopp’s hesitance to push through a January deal could prove costly for Liverpool, according to a report in the Mirror.

Lemar became one of the most sought after young talents in Europe after scoring 14 goals as well as providing 17 assists to help Monaco land the Ligue 1 title last season.

Liverpool were one of several clubs to show a keen interest in signing the 22-year-old during the summer and the Reds have been tipped to renew their interest this month after failing to get a deal agreed during the closing stages of the window.

The previous price in the summer was widely quoted to be around £90m, however, the Mirror are citing reports from Liverpool Echo that claim Monaco have now dropped their asking price to around £61m.

That kind of money seems like a great deal for a player of Lemar’s potential in today’s market, however, the newspaper suggests that even at £61m Klopp won’t be rushed in to a deal this month as he’d rather wait until the summer to assess his options.

The Mirror are quoting RMC Sport journalist Loic Tanzi as saying that while Monaco are open to cashing-in, he’s been informed Liverpool have no intention of submitting a big offer this month.

That hesitance from Klopp could prove costly as Tanzi claims that Arsenal remain in the hunt for Lemar’s signature with Arsene Wenger eyeing the French international as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez.

On Lemar, Tanzi is quoted as saying by the Mirror:

“He is their priority to replace Alexis Sanchez. Monaco are not totally against the idea of an offer this month, but it would have to be a very big offer.

“I am told that Liverpool wouldn’t make a big offer.”

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but it will be interesting to see how Liverpool would respond if Arsenal were to table a formal offer for Lemar this month.

If Klopp wants the player badly enough you would imagine he’d bring forward his transfer plans to try and sign Lemar in January but I think at £61m the Frenchman would be a great signing for Liverpool or indeed Arsenal.
