Arsenal have stolen a march on Liverpool by launching a £58m move to sign highly-rated Sporting Lisbon attacker Gelson Martins this summer, according to reports in Portugal via TeamTalk.
Martins has developed in to one of the most exciting players in Portuguese football since breaking in to the Sporting first team two years ago having joined the clubs youth system when he was a teen.
The 23-year-old enjoyed an excellent campaign last season having provided 13 goals and 13 assists in all competitions to earn a place in the Portugal squad ahead of this summers World Cup finals.
That form has caught the attention of clubs here in England with Liverpool long-term admirers of the winger and TeamTalk claim Jurgen Klopp has been weighing-up a formal move this summer.
The Reds boss needs to add depth to his attack and Martins would provide competition for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane if he was to join the Merseysiders over the coming months.
However, it looks like Arsenal have stolen a march on Liverpool as TeamTalk are citing a report from O Jogo that claims the Gunners have launched a £58m bid to sign Martins after they identified him as a key target.
New head coach Unai Emery is looking to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger after replacing the long-serving Frenchman and a natural winger is something Arsenal have lacked in recent years.
Martins is predominantly a right-winger and the Portuguese publication says Emery wants him to play alongside Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil behind Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng next season.
Liverpool have also been strongly linked with Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele in recent weeks but Arsenal’s move could prompt Klopp to step-up his interest in Martins.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but it looks like Martins is a wanted man and he could be offered a new challenge here in England if Arsenal or Liverpool could secure a deal for his signature this summer.
