Man Utd Made Late Attempt To Hijack Liverpool’s £75m Deal As Player Underwent Medical
Manchester United made a last ditch attempt to hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign Virgil van Dijk as the defender underwent his medical at Anfield
The Premier League transfer window may be closed but European clubs can still buy from English teams and managers are planning for the future so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip. Today, news on Man Utd’s attempts to sign Virgil van Dijk…
Manchester United made a last ditch attempt to hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign Virgil van Dijk as the defender underwent his medical at Anfield, according to reports via the Mirror.
After a prolonged transfer saga dating back to last summer, van Dijk eventually joined Liverpool from Southampton in January for £75m – a world-record fee for a defender – and he’s proven to be worth every penny as the defender has helped solve Jurgen Klopp’s problems at the back.
The 27-year-old put in another colossal performance during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night and van Dijk has enhanced his reputation as one of the best centre-backs in the world during his short stint on Merseyside.
However, it could have been different had Manchester United got their way as the Mirror are citing a report from the Daily Mail that claims they made a last ditch attempt to hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign van Dijk last winter.
The newspaper says United made their approach to Southampton just as van Dijk was putting the finishing touches on his move to Anfield and it proved too late as the defender was already undergoing his medical and had his heart set on joining Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho will no doubt rue United’s failure to land van Dijk as the United boss has been desperate to sign another top class central defender and he missed out on the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng this summer.
Their inability to strengthen their defence looks set to cost United as they looked all over the place at the back during the shock 3-2 defeat to Brighton on Sunday with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof both putting-in disappointing performances.

Van Dijk would have been a superb signing for United but their pain is Liverpool’s gain as the Dutch international has been central to Klopp’s side and will play a key role in any potential title challenge this season.
